Why we love it
‘Dead!’
Latin: Mortuis!
It’s an antique purple paste to mimic amethyst. But what the Christopher Biggins does it mean?!
Why would a letter writer seal a phrase with ‘Dead!’?
Well, I have no solid answers on this one, but I’m genuinely wondering if the phrase ‘I’m ded’, as so beloved across the pond, actually dates back to the 1800’s.
The contents of my letter are so shocking that they’ve caused me to metaphorically expire.
Because I feel fairly certain it wouldn’t be used to announce an actual death. Given the exclamation mark. Rather blunt, and not terribly British is it?!
So I think my best guess it was a forewarning of the scandalous, outrageous and delicious gossip held within the epistle.
But what do I know?!
In any event I’m very fond of it. It’s giving hard goth vibes in that deep rich purple too.
