‘Montez’
(French: Rise)

A Georgian carnelian handcarved intaglio of a winged heart (kinda) set in 18ct yellow gold with champagne & cognac diamond highlights.

When BM collector H gave the brief for this bespoke I had misgivings. Was it too modern for an antique intaglio? A step too far?

But we decided to give it a whirl and I’m so glad we did.

After much marinading. Seriously far too much. I decided that something abstractly resembling a comet or a satellite was befitting of an intaglio instructing us to rise.

Rise. RISE. Yes we will bloody rise. And we won’t stop. We will rise so damned high we’ll be amongst the stars, orbiting around the Milky Way. That works.

And now I’m humming Zoom by Fat Larry’s Band.
Everything is always a song. I can find a lyric to match any intaglio. Trouble is then it stays for ages.

As an aside, some clients also have songs attached to them now. Usually based on a simple affectionate rhyme. Penny Lane, you know who you are!

Anyway, that’s how the Sputnik pendant became a thing. It took 9 long months to completion. Multiple drawings, tweak after tweak, 3 renders and then we thought we had it and made it up. But the pendant that arrived was not good enough and was further tweaked then completely remade. New designs are hard when you’re exacting.

Aside from satellite vibes a pleasing secondary boon is that I love mid-century jewels and have both a vintage Sputnik ring and some badass vintage Sputnik earrings in PC.

So to have a BM piece that abstractly riffs off satellites and doffs the cap to the period Sputnik jewellery that I so enjoy feels most gratifying.

Like the actual Sputnik itself this design feels like something of a departure…..one small step for client; one giant leap for BM?! 🤣 I don’t imagine anything so meteoric to be fair, but you never can tell…..

What I really want to be able to do right now is spout one of my best yarns about this ring.

But I’ve spent much of the last week pouring all my verbosity into these wretched applications I’m on with.
I’m a spent force. Empty tank. Nothing left to give. Running on fumes.

So I’m going to keep it brief.

Depicted on the Georgian carnelian intaglio are two love birds, beak to beak.
These fluffsters mate 4lyfe.
They’re inside a really incredibly carved and preserved ouroboros, a snake eating its own tail in a symbol of the infinite, eternal and everlasting.
Ouroboros’ as a symbol have been around for yonks. But were popularised by the epic love story that was Victoria & Albert. They were a true love match.

They had nine kids; nudge wink.
Albert had a primitive switch contraption installed by the head of the four-poster which locked the bedroom door.
Say no more.
Those two loved to rut. 🤣 (ok so I did say more).

Anyhoo, point is Queen V’s engagement ring featured an ouroboros, catapulting the talisman into high fashion.

The intaglio is the ultimate expression of love. And therefore perfect for (stoopid) Valentine’s Day. (Don’t mind my bitter self; I’ll probably masturbate and then cry myself to sleep. Just like the last 3 years. It’ll be fine🤣).

🦚 PC Peacocking 🦚

This Sunday I bring you 3 Italian greats. That’s two of my PC fobs with Italian script…. and Pavarotti!

All that’s missing is a pistachio gelato and being sat outside at the Piazza Navona and my life would officially be complete!

First up we have a carnelian Cupid, he’s holding one of his lurrrrve arrows and, perhaps unusually, the eternal flame.
Meanwhile down below he’s kicking the globe as though it were a football.

The motto reads ‘What a beautiful balloon!!!’ (Che bello palloncino!!) and speaks, I think, to the idea that we are teeny tiny beings beholden to the fates. A useful reminder that we cannot control everything (or much even) so we should try, so much as possible, to chillax!

It’s about seeing life less seriously, seeking to control only that which we can control and for the rest, enjoying the ride I suppose. Scream if you wanna go faster!

It’s a wise, whimsical wonder!

The second is much less cryptic. A beautifully hued agate depicting two Cupids exchanging chubby hearts.
The motto reads ‘One for another’ (Uno per alto).

It speaks to the reciprocal nature of love. We must give to receive. A simple principle that seems to have forsaken so many of us these days.

This serves as a talisman to me to remind me not to pour my love and energy in places where it is not requited, valued and matched. Because that is something I have quite the problem with. I’m working on that!
