Hello my fellow magpies, welcome back to the mischief
Every so often, I come across an antique sentiment that makes the centuries between its original owner and us feel suddenly very small. Wine Does Wonders was one of those. Because for all the grand declarations of love, courage, fidelity and devotion I’ve found carved into seals over the years… apparently our ancestors also understood the restorative powers of a glass of wine. And frankly, I love them for it.
Some things never change
What immediately struck me about Wine Does Wonders was just how wonderfully human it felt. Wine has carried its own symbolism for thousands of years. It’s been associated with celebration, abundance, pleasure and conviviality, appearing everywhere from ancient mythology to the tables around which people have gathered for centuries.
But it’s the sentiment itself that makes this one so special to me. There’s wit in it. A little irreverence. And that knowing feeling shared by anyone who has ever sat down with someone they love, poured a glass and proceeded to put the entire world to rights.
Centuries change. People, apparently, rather less so. And perhaps that’s why this particular seal felt so Bauble Magpie.
Why an Intaglio Ingot?
There are some antique seals I find and immediately know they should remain completely unique.
They’re waiting for one person to recognise their story and make them their own.
And then there are the rare ones that make me think: Far too many Magpies are going to relate to this.
Wine Does Wonders was firmly in the second camp.
I wanted to take that wonderful old sentiment and give it another life, allowing more of us to carry this tiny connection to the people who came before us.
And so, Wine Does Wonders became our newest Bauble Magpie Intaglio Ingot.
A talisman for connection across the ages
Perhaps she’s a talisman for friendship. Perhaps she marks evenings spent around a table with the people who know you best. Perhaps she’s a reminder to make room for pleasure, celebration and the good things in life. Or perhaps you’re simply a woman who firmly believes that, after a particularly trying Tuesday… wine does, indeed, do wonders. I shan’t judge.
In fact, I’ll probably join you.
