Emma always says if she ran a restaurant, when she interviewed a new chef she’d be interested in just two things: how well they can fry an egg and how good their crepes are.

She does not have a particular fondness for either, but her point is this: the simplest things, with the least ingredients, are the hardest to perfect. Because there is nowhere to hide.

For the longest time Emma has observed a stream of fairly mediocre vintage hearts be offered up and pounced upon on Instagram. Oftentimes, lightweight and battered with shockingly awful gold work (the bails people, such horrors!).

The branded vintage hearts from the huge jewellery houses come with the mark up that can be commanded by such elite establishments.

The modern hearts offered by smaller brands are embarrassingly light in gold. Daylight robbery – wafer thin and flimsy.

Crucially, and very obviously (to a jeweller), they’re pretty much all cast. Tell-tale crappy toploops being the dead giveaway here, together with a certain flabbiness of shape and the appearance of the gold itself. Not that there is anything wrong with casting. Not at all; for the right pieces. But suboptimal for a vast expanse of gold such as a large pendant. Precision of shape and porosity in the metal is what ought to be examined here.

Emma felt she could do better. And Mega Big Love is the output.

Our heart is tooled. What that means is Emma has painstakingly designed the heart, using technology to get the precise dimensions for the desired aesthetic.

After doing that for the best part of six months, (half a mm here and half a mm there) the design was finally approved and sent away to be ‘tooled’. This essentially means an artisan made a giant punch for our heart – best thought of in the same terms as a cookie cutter.

Each heart we make is cut out of a sheet of solid gold with our special cookie cutter. One at a time.
