Freedom & Captivity Pendant

An exceptionally large Georgian Octagonal carnelian heraldic intaglio set as our Geometric pendant in recycled 14ct yellow gold with accent diamonds and sapphires. A unique, one of a kind statement piece.

The intaglio features imagery of a bird as the crest, likely a ptarmigan judging by the fluffster feathered feet on show. Below we have a garland decorated shield with a shackle in the centre of the shield.

Why we love it

For the uninitiated a ptarmigan is essentially a grouse that lives in chilly climes and has adapted for life with cold toes. Would that we could do that too!

The ptarmigan is symbolic of the spirit of those who endure challenging times. Those who fight on with resilience and courage. The tenacious.

The shackle is more obvious, representative of confinement. A fettering of freedom.

Which made this intaglio irresistible to Emma. The dichotomy of a bird, symbol of liberty juxtaposed against a shackle the ultimate motif for imprisonment. And then, the ptarmigan itself and the notion of holding the line in face of adversity.

To Emma this intaglio is about staying the course. Being strong because you have to be. Maintaining the sense of self notwithstanding restrictions.

If Nelson Mandela were still with us it would have been perfect for him.

But there are not many Nelsons around the place are there? So maybe this intaglio should be your talisman for surviving and continuing in your own perceived metaphorical cage.

If you have ever been squashed (or are still being squashed) wear this piece to restore your dignity, positivity and to help you endure, the plucky ptarmigan who prevails.
