Spring Is Not Always Green

Unique, carnelian, Georgian hand carved intaglio

Features the head and shoulders of a woman holding a sheaf of wheat, with the Latin motto Ver non semper viret (Spring is not always green)

Excellent antique condition

Why we love it

We know it’s likely to be Ceres, goddess of the harvest and fertility, depicted on this seal, particularly given the reference to spring, but we prefer the idea of a generic farm wench. Whoever she is, she’s carrying a wheatsheaf, symbolic of fertility and bounty. She also has amazing breasts. Seriously, not a droop in sight. She’d pass the pencil test with flying colours (for those of you who can remember it)!

The Latin motto on the scrolling banner is a fairly morose and depressing message: spring is not always green! A stark reminder that nothing in life is a guarantee. All the more reason to eat that cake, swig that champagne, buy that piece of jewellery. Or buy this intaglio and have it made into a spectacular piece of jewellery just for you.

Seize the moment peeps.

The time is now.
