Fly Like A Kite

Very dark green agate intaglio

Image of a kite (bird of prey)

Why we love it

We have it on good authority from our favourite expert that the bird on this seal is the one the children’s toy is named after – nope, not Batman’s sidekick, we’re talking about the kite.

Gliding low and leisurely over fields and farmlands, riding the currents, kites are associated with freedom.

Buoyant. Effortless. Graceful.

They’re also sociable, as birds go, though pretty picky when it comes to who they hang with. In fact really just other kites. We imagine smaller birds aren’t likely to want to be friends anyway, and would be less inclined to come over for supper!

Kites also have a reputation as pirates, stealing materials to line their nests (and presumably knocking back the rum), which made them a fave of the Stratford bard, Shakespeare. In The Winter’s Tale he cautions “when the kite builds, look to lesser linen”, in reference to the birds’ swiping clothes from washing lines, the wee devils that they are!

The perfect talisman for those of a freewheeling, laid back nature, with a penchant for the Keith Richards approach to fashion! Or as a reminder to ease off and go with the flow a little more.
