Caduceus Snake Love
This is a Victorian clear paste seal which we have transformed into a dreamy pearlescent doublet using an antique mother of pearl gaming chip.
Imagery galore on this piece with twin caduceus snakes, twinned hearts pierced through with double crossed arrows over an urn with the eternal flame burning brightly, as it always does.
The urn has the French phrase ‘La Foi Public’ on it meaning ‘The Public Faith’.
It’s a symbolism behemoth!
Oh and by the way we have two of these identical seals available! Earrings anyone? Or a pair of pendants for you and your beloved?
Why we love it
Known as the symbol of medicine, the Caduceus depicts the image of two serpents wrapped around a staff with wings. It might seem ironical that destructive creatures like snakes are used to represent a healing purpose, but here’s the history behind it and the symbolism it represents.
In Greek and Roman mythology, the Caduceus is the symbol of the Greek god Hermes, comparable to the Roman god Mercury. The word Caduceus comes from the Latin caduceus meaning herald. This is because the symbol was assigned to Hermes, the herald (messenger) of the gods.
Even though it’s origins as a symbol of medicine seemingly occurred by accident, today the Caduceus is accepted as a representation of healing and medicine. It can be seen on hospital coats, uniforms, brooches, and pins. Sometimes, the Caduceus is used as a symbol of identification for healthcare workers, with their initials incorporated into the symbol, as well as the indication of their role as doctors, nurses, or emergency medical technicians.
Phew! that’s the caduceus part sorted. But what about the rest of the seal?
The twinned hearts pierced through with double crossed arrows are symbolic of lovers, bound for all time which is underscored by the presence of the eternal flame and the words professing public faith.
So all in all we would suggest that this would be the perfect seal for a pair of ride or die partners who were also involved in healthcare or healing professions but as we often espouse when a seal is complex and multifaceted in meaning the matter is wholly subjective and the only important thing really is what the seal says to you! (Off the hook neatly there ha ha).
