Victorian 15ct Gold Good Luck Nautical Flags
An antique Victorian glass cabouchon bracelet reverse painted with flags from the nautical flag alphabet. The closed back settings each have a letter engraved on the back to spell ‘GOOD LUCK’.
The cabouchons are linked together with two rows of cable link chain.
Crafted in antique 15ct warm yellow gold. The clasp is cleverly concealed within the letter ‘K’ cabouchon.

Flags have been used by sailors for hundreds of years to allow the crew of one ship to communicate with another. The International Code of Signals (ICS) is a standardised series of signals encompassing flags whose origins can be traced back to 1817 when the novelist and Royal Navy Officer, Captain Frederick Marryat published ‘A Code of Signals for the Merchant Service’. What is now the ICS was drafted in 1855 by the British Board of Trade and published in 1857 as the Commercial Code.
The flags depicted in the bracelet correspond to the Commercial Code from 1857-1900.
