Amphitrite Intaglio
An incredible clear paste seal depicting Amphitrite and a hippocamp
This a signed piece by Edward Burch (1730-1814), renowned gem engraver
Why we love it
In classical Greek mythology and art, the goddess Amphitrite represents the literal personification and divine spirit of the ocean. While her husband Poseidon embodied the sea’s violent, destructive traits, Amphitrite symbolized its calm, nurturing, and fertile qualities.
The hippocampus is depicted as a fish-tailed horse associated with the sea. They are described as having the head and fore-parts of a horse and the serpentine tail of a fish, often linked to Poseidon, the god of the ocean.
