Why we love it
This large and stunning detailed intaglio depicts our loveable cherub Cupid, rowing Father Time, aka Cronos, aka Saturn, aka the Grim Reaper, across a pretty choppy sea.
Clearly Cupid represents love, and Father Time is the personification of time (no surprises there). In recent centuries Father Time is most often depicted as an elderly bearded man, sometimes with wings, carrying a scythe and an hourglass or other timekeeping device. All of which remind us of time’s constant forwards movement.
To add to our interpretation, the sea symbolises life and the boat our corporeal being. So what do we make of it? The answer’s in the motto: it’s love that makes time pass, no matter life’s ups and downs. Yet again, it’s all about the love.
But let’s not limit love to the romantic kind. Embrace its diversity. Celebrate love in all its guises. None of us know the length or conditions of that crossing but it’s love that strokes our hair through the worst bouts of sea sickness (metaphorically speaking of course), whatever its form.
