Secure Whilst Upright

Victorian yellow paste intaglio

Imagery of a Doric column, surrounded by the text ‘Secure whilst upright’

Why we love it

One of the three orders of ancient Greek and later Roman architecture, the Doric column represents masculinity and strength. Plain, simple, solid and more than a little phallic. Designed to bear the weight of the some of the world’s most utterly gob-smacking buildings, the Parthenon in Greece being an obvious example. And since the Parthenon is proper old, it’s fair to assume the Doric column is built to last.

Upright, constant and steadfast, this seal is a nod to those we rely on to keep the sky from falling in on us. Who protect, cherish and shelter us. Those who are in it for the duration. Working tirelessly to make our world safe and secure.

They may not have the raw sex appeal of those wild, untameable, creative types who turn us inside out then leave as quickly as they arrived. Nope, theirs is the slow burn of everlasting love. The ones who will always have our best interests at heart.

A note of caution however. The motto brings a warning. Even the most solid and upright of people can tumble if pushed hard enough. Unless they’re remarkably resilient to the force of gravity. Like the Tower of Pisa.
