Faith Is Sufficient

Large Georgian rounded rectangle carnelian intaglio

Imagery of a shield containing a lion passant, topped with a crest depicting an eagle’s head in profile

Latin text reads fides sufficit (faith is sufficient) in a banner at the bottom

Why we love it

At the time of this intaglio, the faith mentioned in the motto would be that of God. As in the big chief in the sky. Further borne out by the imagery of a lion passant, synonymous with strength and stateliness – what could be more stately than an almighty creator? With the head of an eagle signalling a release from servitude, and presumably a descent heavenwards, free from all earthly burdens.

We prefer a more grounded faith. In humanity. A faith in the good of people, despite often overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

In the face of the world’s awfulness, it’s about staying positive. Holding on to hope. Believing in better times to come. Trusting in our power as committed individuals to change the world.

Sometimes faith is all we have. Often it’s all we need.

Profound or what?!
