The imagery is rooted in a medieval legend where a mother pelican, in times of scarcity, was believed to feed her chicks by piercing her breast and letting her blood flow.
It is often seen in art: paintings, stained glass, heraldic crests, intaglios and jewellery (most notably Elizabeth I sported a banging, blinging PHP pendant, for England was her only child).
