An antique deep green paste seal featuring imagery of Venus appearing to resignedly admonish an annoyed Cupid
Why we love it
In the Roman myth of Cupid and Psyche, Venus, the goddess of love, becomes enraged when mortals admire Psyche’s beauty more than her own. Out of spite and revenge, she orders her son, Cupid, to make Psyche fall in love with a hideous creature.
Cupid however accidentally pricks himself with his own arrow, causing him to fall in love with Psyche. Venus’s anger and subsequent actions drive the narrative of the myth.
