A beautiful late Georgian/early Victorian rock crystal intaglio depicting a pansy with overarching French motto ‘Pensee A Moi’ which translates to ‘Think Of Me’
This intaglio is hand carved and unique and benefits from lovely facet work to the edge of the matrix and the back of the intaglio
Why we love it
We do love a pun here at BM HQ and this is one of that recurs in antique seals
The humble pansy sounds, when spoken, mush like the French Verb ‘Penser’, to think
As such the pansy became synonymous with holding someone in your thoughts and/or wishing to be thought of by another and a stalwart of symbolism and Victorian floriography and is a common motif in jewellery of the era. And we could not love that more
