Peace Wins Intaglio
A beautiful Georgian era carnelian intaglio depicting a laurel wreath rested against rocks with overarching motto in French ‘Paix’ meaning ‘Peace’
Why we love it
Laurel (or bay as it’s also called – same plant) is symbolic of triumph, victory and all the good glory that goes with
Think of the laurel wreaths handed out to assorted sporting stars: Olympians, F1 drivers and racehorses…and them there Romans wore them loads too back in the day…..victory you see
The origin of the laurel wreath is rooted in Greek myth when Daphne escaped Apollo by transforming herself into a laurel tree. apollo then declared the tree sacred and started sporting the laurel wreath as a sartorial statement, subsequently laurel wreaths were awarded to winners at The Pythian Games held at Delphi, in honour of Apollo
Anyhoo this intaglio depicts a laurel wreath above the motto ‘Peace’……ergo Peace Wins….and is this crazy mixed up world who doesn’t need that as a talisman to anchor them on the daily?!
