Peace At Last Wax Seal
An Antique clear paste seal to mimic rock crystal depicting Cupid bound and defeated, decidedly downcast with it too
The seal is a representation of the popular classic myth ‘The Punishment Of Cupid’ which has been a preferred theme for artists over the ages. Master Gem Engraver Luigi Pichler carved this subject onto a sardonyx intaglio ring which was once owned by the Duke of Wellington
Excitingly the imagery depicted is a faithful replica of an intaglio which resides in The British Museum no less – fancy!
Why we love it
This clear seal features the winged, cherubic cupid restrained with his hands bound behind his back with a Tropaion behind him. A Tropaion was a victory salute performed by those there Ancient Greeks and later the Romans. The armour of the defeated foe would be hung upon a monument and dedicated to the Gods in thanksgiving for the victory
Here we see our favourite little Love God, Cupid in a novel and unfamiliar guise. For he is defeated with his hands bound and held captive. Presumably as a punishment for his love shenanigans and generally leading folk to pursue wanton acts of reckless desire.
Perhaps somewhat incongruously at the top of the seal we have the French word ‘Paix’ meaning peace. Perhaps suggesting how peaceful life can be when Cupid is taken off the chess board, the peace of single life, without romantic complication.
