Perhaps less obvious and more universal is what a thistle represents which is thriving in adversity. Thistles are pretty much indestructible, they grow and bloom amid cracks in concrete, you can cut them down and still they rise, their roots deep and labyrinthine, they take the knocks, they weather the blows and they flourish defiantly, able to survive the most barren and inhospitable wastelands. So maybe this is for a person that identifies with the humble thistle

Next up is the motto ‘Dinna Forget’; Scots for don’t forget of course and reference to the popular poem by Eliza Clark (1818-1889) author and poet associated with the Chartist movement. She was a proponent of political freedom for women and believed in the ideology of self-improvement through education, indeed it seems she coined the phrase ‘levelling up’.
