Cupid & The Centaur Wax Seal

A beautiful antique paste seal, light purple in colour featuring imagery of Cupid riding a centaur

This seal is a signed piece, associated with the highest quality seals. The signature is possibly Greek and appears as ‘Dixage’ or ‘Dixace’, Emma has looked but has been unable to tie the signature to an individual engraver

Why we love it

Cupid riding a centaur is a popular classical theme in art, paintings, sculpture and sometimes even jewellery

The symbolism is that of the overpowering, universal strength of love that can tame even the wildest, most untamed passions….or beasts

In Greco-Roman mythology and art, centaurs represent the dual nature of man: part man and part beast

An allegory for love mastering brute force and primal instinct
