What, you might ask, is the strange, symbol at the bottom of the shield, which looks suspiciously like something you’d see in a high school physics textbook? Why it’s a cinquefoil emblem, otherwise known as a potentilla flower, used to signify prestige, power and loyalty. A little of the feminine to soften the rampant, macho ‘king of the beasts’ imagery.

The crescents, in the lion’s clutches and at the top of the shield, talk of the anointing of a great warrior by the sitting sovereign. Symbolic of glory and valour. Also synonymous with motherhood and fertility.

And finally the torse. Stretched across the middle of the shield. Representative of the lady’s favour, often given to a crusader by his love on his departure for war.

All told there’s a lot of female energy contained within this seal. Some recognition perhaps for the supportive, behind-the-scenes role women played in Georgian society in preparing the men to fulfil their potential.

A progressive seal ahead of its time? We can but dream.

A talisman of respect for all those women in supporting roles, who helped so many men achieve greatness. And especially for the women who refused to take a back seat. Who came out of the shadows to give all women a voice.
