Hello Mischief makers,
There’s been a steady stream of messages recently asking about Victorian love tokens. What they are. Why they exist. And why people seem to feel something quite strong about them, quite quickly. Which I always find interesting, because on the surface they’re very simple things. Coins that someone has taken and hand-engraved with initials, symbols, or short messages. Nothing overly elaborate. No grand declarations. They were made to be carried. Passed between people. Kept close to carry their meanings and that gives them their true emotional weight.
Victorian Love Tokens and the story behind them
Now before the wonderful world of Bauble Magpie and the antique jewelry world as we know it, Victorian love tokens weren’t only designed with wearing in mind. They were coins that had been intentionally altered, smoothed down and engraved, often by hand, into something personal as a quiet exchange between two people. A mark of connection, affection, sometimes remembrance. Something that said “this is ours” without needing to explain itself to anyone else. And over time, they’ve taken on even more layers. Because every mark, every engraving, every softened edge is part of a life that’s already been lived…but as we both know these talismans aren’t finished with yet.
From token to talisman
What I love about working with these pieces is what happens when they’re selected for commission. They integrate into your daily wear. They start to hold meaning in your life, becoming something you reach for without thinking that sits against your skin and becomes part of your day, your routine, your sense of self. We’ve just finished a stunning commissioned project using not one, but three love tokens that I can’t wait to share properly because not only is the piece remarkable but so is the story behind the commission. I’ll be sharing it with you very soon so be sure to keep your eye on the socials!
Explore our token trove
I originally got into Victorian love tokens because they’re perfect bedfellows for intaglios. They sit in that same space, small, unassuming pieces that carry a surprising amount of meaning, and feel deeply personal to the person who chooses them. Each one is different. Each one already has a story behind it and they’re ready to become part of yours. Have a look through at my personal top picks and see what resonates…

Mischief makers don’t miss your bliss
Some things don’t need to be explained in great historic detail to make sense. And the pieces that tend to stand out are rarely the loudest or the most obvious. They’re the intaglio pendants that stay with you. The custom signet ring you return to. The antique jewelry that integrates naturally and becomes part of your life. If you’ve found one of those here don’t let it slip away.
With love and shiny things, always
