Why we love it
If ever there was a more timeous moment for this pendant, we can’t think of it.
Cast from one of Emma’s personal collection seals, this powerful pendant really packs a punch.
The seal is believed to commemorate the ending of slavery in the US on June 19, 1865, when the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation was ordered in Texas; at the end of the American Civil War. Now a federal holiday in the US, 19 June is affectionately monickered ‘Juneteenth’.
So Emma, why this piece? And why now?
Welp. Juneteenth is a pivotal day in modern history. Right on.
But there’s more to it in our view. A second strand.
Our perception is that civil liberties Stateside are under attack and are essentially being unilaterally revoked. And not so subtly either. We believe that human rights & democracy may be the most threatened that they’ve been in our lifetime.
The horrific stories wafting across the pond certainly whiff of a racist agenda, as well as generalised affront to just about any minority group you’d care to mention. And so, it seems to us, that this piece, anchored in history, espousing the hope for & importance of unity as the human race may be even more poignant & powerful now than when the seal was first created.
The piece works as a simple celebration of Juneteenth but also carries a pleasing ‘Fight The Power’ subtext.
It’s about protest & unity & optimism.
Solidarity, support & simply knowing right from wrong.
It’s about holding your beliefs without fear.
Because we’d have really thought that in this day & age we would no longer be mired in this ridiculous & multifarious bullshit. Alas……
