We often talk about Bauble Magpie pieces being a talisman, but what is one? Pause a moment while we explain.
A talisman is any object assigned with religious or magical powers intended to bring good luck to the individuals for whom they’re made. They’re often inscribed with symbols or words that are thought to hold a specific meaning or power. Talismans are usually small portable objects carried on your person in a variety of ways; in the case of Bauble Magpie Custom pieces, they take the form of rings and pendants made from original antique seals, or our fabulous Intaglio Ingots which are precious metal casts of Georgian and Victorian artefacts.
Talismans are not to be confused with amulets, which are used to ward off evil, danger and disease. In some cultures, amulets are considered to possess apotropaic magic, being potent tools to repel evil spirits, the evil eye and other malevolent forces. Typically worn around the neck, they can be easily clutched or rubbed in moments of need!
