Angel Of Death Wax Seal
A beautiful green antique paste seal featuring imagery of an angel with a scythe holding the headless and limbless torso of a man
Signed Burch to the edge
Edward Burch (1730-1814) was a prominent gem engraver and artist in England, known for his work in engraving gemstones and medals. He served as the engraver to King George III and the Duke of York, and he was a full member of the Royal Academy of Arts from 1770. Burch was recognised for his contributions to the art of engraving, particularly in depicting Greek and Roman subjects, and he also modeled wax portraits for notable figures like James Tassie and Josiah Wedgwood. His work was exhibited regularly at Royal Academy exhibitions, showcasing his expertise in the art of engraving
Why we love it
The imagery is likely that of Azrael, the angel of death. Azrael severs a persons soul from their body once they die, his scythe being a symbolic representation of this
