(Almost) Monarch Of The Glen

Unique Georgian heraldic amethyst intaglio with deep faceted back

Hand carved with a stag’s head in profile and the initials JMW beneath

Excellent antique condition with minimal surface wear

Why we love it

A truly sumptuous and large intaglio starring that wild beast of the windswept Scottish mountains.

The stag is synonymous with stamina, virility, grace, instincts, maturity, regeneration and spiritual enlightenment. It’s the Mac-Daddy of deer.

Mature and experienced, a stag such as this one has endured life’s challenges, and has a massive crown of antlers to show for it. The antlers shed each year only to grow back bigger the next, hence the regeneration bit. There’s also a strict hierarchy of antlers – 12 points for a Royal, 14 for an Imperial and 16 for that much lauded Monarch of the Glen.

Because stags are native to every continent, except Australia and Antarctica, they feature in the mythology and folklore of many ancient civilisations. Making this intaglio a multi-cultured, wise old man, with some no-messing head gear.

And if your initials also happen to be JMW, then you just won the talisman lottery!

Flown away home.
