Limited Edition The Witch

Our wonderfully detailed Intaglio Ingot ‘The Witch’ has been created by moulding and casting from an original antique intaglio

For Emma’s money it is the most highly sought after design. It is also rarer than the proverbial hen’s teeth. In 2023, at auction, a battered paste version in a base metal fob sold for over £2,000 plus fees.

Generously crafted in sterling silver with a recycled 14ct yellow gold mount and bail and hallmarked to the high heavens

The fixed bail is our Diddy size to accommodate most chain sizes

The pieces in this limited drop are individually numbered 1-10, engraved to the reverse

Why we love it

Our spectacular witch rides her broomstick through the night sky with nary a care in the world

The whimsical and slightly subversive motto reads ‘All Have Their Hobbies’….. and indeed we do!

The etymology of this maxim is understood to be derived from the UK classic ‘To ride one’s hobby-horse’; meaning to follow a chosen pursuit or passion and with vigour. This phrase evolved over time into the modern word ‘hobby’. The imagery of the witch on her broom is remniscent of a child riding its toy ‘hobby horse’ and so it follows that the wording pokes fun and makes a play on those similarities

She’s not brandishing a croquet mallet (as Emma originally suspected!). Rather it is her hammer which is a bit of a cheeky dig, derived from the fact that the received wisdom for discernment of a witch was enshrined in the 1490 oeuvre ‘Malleus Maleficarum’. This title best translates as ‘The Hammer Of The Witches’. Thenceforth, in what we think is most likely a figurative flipping of the bird to this archaic dogma, we started to see witches depicted wielding hammers.
