The Crow & The Pitcher

Impressively large oval carnelian intaglio

Imagery of a crow (with a pebble in its beak) and a pitcher, under the shade of a tree

Why we love it

Get a load of this big boy! And with a tale to tell to boot.

The imagery references Aesop’s fable of The Crow and The Pitcher. A thirsty crow comes upon a pitcher with water at the bottom. ‘Score!’, it thinks.

Just one teeny, tiny problem – the water is beyond the reach of its beak.

The crow pushes the pitcher with all its might. The pitcher barely wobbles. Undeterred, the crow leans in, giving it an extra bit of muscle. The pitcher fails to yield.

Lesser birds would have given up at this point and gone in search of a stream. Or a puddle. Or decided they weren’t thirsty after all. Not so our crow. It drops in pebbles one by one until the water rises to the top of the pitcher, allowing it to drink its fill.

The moral of the story? In difficult situation, better to rely on wits and intelligence, rather than resort to brute force.

And like that other well-kent of Aesop’s fables, the tortoise and the hare, patience and persistence win the day.

A talismanic reminder to keep your cool in the face of adversity.

Mind over matter. Marathon over sprint.
