Cupid’s Chariot
A Victorian purple paste glass mimicking amethyst seal featuring imagery of Cupid in his chariot drawn by a lion and a goat
Why we love it
Here depicted we see Cupid, the god of Love, riding a ‘biga’ – a chariot drawn by two animals – which is being pulled by a lion and a goat
Cupid is often pictured conquering a lion – the mighty animal that symbolises strength and power. The horned goat, with its capricious character, is associated with lust and untamed passions in mythology. This seal therefore shows Cupid taming several aspects of male behaviour
